The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F**k book review

To be honest the cover of this book lured me to read it. I knew that a lot of swearing would be involved but i cared less. I love books where authors don’t play around the bush but tell you the harsh truth, ( Disappointing Panda, he calls it). For my point of view, we need more writers like Mark who don’t sugarcoat things, he is simply brutally honest. This book is a self help guide that open your eyes, to cut all the BS and concentrate on the important things in your life. “Not giving a f**k does not mean been indifferent; it means being comfortable with being different”, Manson writes.

Reading this book changed me and now i see the world in a whole new perspective. It’s a wake up call which tells you to put your self together and do something meaningful. He stresses on the point that life is all not filled with happiness, at times you gonna go through shit but it’s okay. In the book he writes, ” The path to happiness is full of shit heaps and shame.” I totally agree with this, i mean, life is not a bed of roses, you gonna catch some painful thorns before you make this “beautiful bed”. Furthermore, we can’t solve all problems in our life, its impossible to do this. “Life is essentially an endless series of problems. The solution to one problem is merely a creation of another”, he writes.

I absolutely agree with him when he tells us to implement the backward law by Alan Watts. The law states that, waiting for a positive experience is a negative experience and accepting the negative experience is a positive experiences. As humans we have a habit of accepting the positive things that happen, like achieving your goals but we shut down, when we go through negative experiences, Like failing a billion times before we accomplish dreams. For us to grow, we need to acknowledge this failures and try to keep pushing no matter what. Remember the denial of failure actually means you are a failure.

In the world we live in, it constantly defines happiness: having that perfect job in the corporate world, riding an expensive car, living in a mansion that more than your salary. Mark illustrates this clearly, by writing, ” don’t be engaged in the superficial and fake definition of a good life, it will mentally drain you”. Most of us spend nearly half of our lives, fantasizing on a life that full of joy, getting anything we want without lifting a figure. we even come to a point, to believe that this is the only happy life, the only way to live. News flash, you are lame if you think that. Albert camus said, ” you will never be happy if you constantly look for what happiness consist of. You will never life if you continue searching for the meaning of life.

The greatest statement from this book is , “change is inevitable.” As we grow older we change for the better and we learn from our previous mistakes. Coming to think about it, we all did some stupid stuff when we were younger since we thought it was fun and harmless. But now that we are older, we just look back and laugh about it.

As we go through life, i believe we should live it the way we want. Don’t let your family, friends or the rest of the world to tell you want to do. I mean, life is too short to care what other people think about you.

For me, i absolutely enjoyed this book, i hope you will too. You can buy it in amazon, the kindle version which i used and take a look.

  1. Sounds like a good read! Giving a f*** has never been my problem though. 🙂 I love this, “waiting for a positive experience is a negative experience and accepting the negative experience is a positive experience.” It’s so true!
